Pets as Therapy

At Godmanchester Community Academy, we are proud to be part of the Pets as Therapy programme, which helps children develop confidence, emotional well-being, and a love of reading through time spent with specially trained animals.

Our visiting Pets as Therapy dog and their handler come into school regularly to work with small groups and individual pupils. These calm, friendly sessions take place in a relaxed environment where children can read aloud, talk, or simply enjoy spending quiet time with the dog.

For many pupils, reading to a pet can feel far less daunting than reading to an adult. The dog listens without judgment — helping children to grow in confidence, improve their fluency, and take pride in their progress.

Beyond reading, Pets as Therapy sessions also promote:

  • Emotional regulation and calmness – spending time with animals helps reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Empathy and responsibility – pupils learn how to approach and care for animals safely and kindly.

  • Communication and connection – children learn to express themselves and engage positively with others.

Our Pets as Therapy sessions have become a much-loved part of school life and a powerful tool within our wider pastoral support offer. They remind us daily that learning and well-being go hand in hand — and that sometimes, a wagging tail and a listening ear can make all the difference.
