Eco Council

At Godmanchester Community Academy, we are passionate about caring for our environment — from our local community to the wider world. Our Eco Council plays a key role in helping us make our school more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and responsible.

The Eco Council was formed in 2021 and works hard to support the school’s Eco-Schools Green Flag initiatives. The council gives pupils a voice in shaping how we look after our planet, encouraging everyone in our community to think carefully about the impact of their actions.

Since their formation, the Eco Council have contributed to a wide range of exciting and meaningful projects, including:

  • The creation of an outdoor science classroom, complete with a pond and wildlife area.

  • Reducing the school’s electricity use through pupil-led energy-saving campaigns.

  • Increasing recycling across classrooms and communal areas.

  • Developing a compost area to reduce waste and support our gardening projects.

  • Setting up a second-hand uniform shop, with regular sales to promote reusing and recycling.

The Eco Council meets regularly to discuss new ideas, share progress, and plan further initiatives. Members work together — and with staff — to make practical changes that help the school become more sustainable and environmentally aware.

Through their work, pupils learn to take responsibility, think critically about global issues, and act as role models for positive environmental action. The Eco Council gives children a space to share their ideas and initiatives, inspiring the whole school to care for our planet and protect it for the future.
