Curriculum

At Godmanchester Community Academy we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum. Whilst we use the National Curriculum as a framework, we have decided to place a much greater emphasis on exposing children to the knowledge that we feel is necessary in order to truly understand the world around us at both a local and global level.

Through our knowledge-rich curriculum we enable our pupils to make informed and accurate observations and connections about their world and experiences. In addition, we believe that we are equipping each and every pupil with the essential foundations for the next stage of their educational journey, and well beyond.

Over the past 12 months we have invested significant time and resource into building our knowledge-rich curriculum. We are incredibly proud of the result but are also passionate about our need to constantly review and amend. We acknowledge that there is always scope for improvement and we whole heartedly embrace this challenge.

Our ‘Whole School Overview’ outlines the curriculum map across the school and has been carefully designed to ensure that each pupil’s development through the school is coherent, logical and progressive. Subjects are taught as specific domains (e.g., Science, Art, History, etc.) but where possible connections have been established to strengthen understanding and application of knowledge.

We fiercely believe that our curriculum and teaching approaches should provide equity of opportunity for all.  All staff within the school are committed to ensuring such equality and as such, have worked tirelessly to develop a consistent approach to teaching.  Underpinning this desire for consistency are Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction.  These ten principles enable us to apply what cognitive science tells us about how humans learn to our practice.  Our desires for equality and consistency have resulted in our approach which provides children with multiple opportunities to practise and consolidate what they are being taught within a supportive and dynamic environment.

We urge you to take the time to read the attached documents which are all designed to enable us to deliver our curriculum as effectively as possible.  If you have any questions or comments then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to provide clarification or further information.
